Myths and Reality

Research shows that survivors of human trafficking experience a myriad of symptoms such as anxiety, numbness, fearfulness, mistrust, depression, self-harm, suicidality, nightmares, flashbacks, and debilitating autoimmune disorders.

Myth No. 1

Trafficking victims are all from poor and indigent, and minority families.

Myth No. 2

It’s okay for my kid to make new friends her own age on social media.

Myth No.

Human trafficking happens only in other countries such as Guatemala or Uganda.

Reality No. 1

Victims are from all socioeconomic levels and all races. Children of doctors, nurses, business owners, blue and white-collar families. And, from poor families.

Reality No. 2

Traffickers use the internet to create fake self-images and voices to groom young impressionable children. A 45-year-old male can easily appear to look and sound like a 15-year-old male or female for example.

Reality No. 3

FACT: 80-93% of all victims of human trafficking in the United States are US-born citizens.
This is called Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST).
